The Prima Parte set, completed in 1743, is Piranesi's first published work. Combining his architectural background and his newfound etching skills, Piranesi designed these invented spaces using his knowledge of perspective and classic architectural design. As described in his dedication, Piranesi intended these works to offer a challenge to the contemporary architectural scene in Rome.

Pope Clement XIII, who had a summer residence at Castel Gandolfo, commissioned these sets, which describe and illustrate the Lago d'Albano area and ancient ruins, the Roman engineering feat of the draining of the Lake, and the interiors of nearby caves, decorated by the Romans and filled with various antiquities.
